The life story of Tom is well known amongst cyclists and his death on the Ventoux in 1967 will never be forgotten, but better memories are of his 1965 World Championship win, and victories at the 1961 Tour of Flanders, the 1964 Milan-San Remo,  and the 1967 Paris-Nice.

Well said, I was about to make a similar comment! As a keen amateur from Liverpool, I loved reading ‘Put me back on my bike’ what a great ambassador to our sport and country he was. Dropped in to see his display in the recreation ground club and then to see his grave. RIP Tommy…..

We really enjoyed the ride, we got back in the club house at 2.30 so pretty much we controlled the rear of the race, being good sportsmen and all that! ha
Hope to do it again next year!

Great site. Thanks for the link to the retro kit @ Pedalling Squares. I’m an old Sunderland boy, long in Canada, 40+ years now, but I couldn’t resist the Peugeot retro jersey and cap made famous by Durham boy Tom Simpson. Cycling’s a summer sport here in Canada, but I take every opportunity to get out on my Felt Z3 road bike. The wife and I are planning a cycling tour of Europe that takes in some of the stages of Le Tour 2015. Loved the pictures of the Ventoux and Alpe d’Huez trips.

Thanks for the comments Derek, good to hear you got sorted with that classic Peugeot outfit of Mr. Tom! You will have a ball in France, so much for cyclists to see and do!
