Tom Simpson Memorial Stone, Haswell, County Durham

Snook Cycling ride in the memory of 1965 World Champion cyclist Tom Simpson, born in Haswell, County Durham in 1937, just 8 miles from the team HQ in Bowburn. Indeed, Snook Cycling race in Tom Simpson BP-Peugeot themed jerseys.

Team Snook Cycling has visited and cycled from all 3 of the Tom Simpson memorial stones that are around Europe – the most famous one being 1km from the summit of Mont Ventoux, the place of his tragic death. The other two monuments are in Harworth, Nottinghamshire at the Harworth & Bircotes Sports and Social Club where Tom lived from 12 years old, and as of 2016, in his birth town of Haswell, County Durham at the Hazelwell Centre on Church St.

Tom Simpson Museum, Harworth

Every year the Tom Simpson Memorial Bike Ride is held out of Harworth, starting and finishing at the Simpson memorial stone at the Harworth & Bircotes Sports and Social Club, that houses the Tom Simpson Museum. TSC Have completed the 50 mile reliability run on three separate years.Tom’s grave is just up the road from the Harworth Social Club at the at the cemetery on Tickhill Road.

The life story of Tom is well known amongst cyclists and his death on the Ventoux in 1967 will never be forgotten, but better memories are of his 1965 World Championship win, and victories at the 1961 Tour of Flanders, the 1964 Milan-San Remo,  and the 1967 Paris-Nice.
